The ant is an INSECT belonging to the same
family as the BEE and the WASP. Ants have a
narrow stalk joining the abdomen and thorax,
and bitting mouthparts, which are sometimes
used for defence. Some ants have stings
whilst others can spray poison from the end
of their abdomen. All ants show some degree
of social organization. There are three main
type of ant, the worker, winged fertile
females, and winged males. In many species of
ant the worker may become a soldier.
Fire ants are classed as a serious pest in
most parts of the United States.
